Alt-Invest 6

New generation of programs for investment projects analysis and strategic financial planning.

Since 2009 Alt-Invest Company has started distributing a new generation of its software for investment projects evaluation and strategic financial planning - Alt-Invest 6. In this program we tried to realize 4-year experience of previous version of the system, and collect all the most reasonable, methodically correct and user-friendly solutions.

The basis for the new program development has become, on the one hand, version 5.12, which absorbed previous 15 years of system development, and, on the other hand, the list of more than hundreds of users and our consultants suggestions. Releasing this version, we have set for ourselves three main priorities:

• traditions - key approaches and general ideology of the system have been tested by years of work and they are not changed significantly, data formats are similar to the previous version;
• Increased functional - many users wishes, which were postponed earlier because of the need for structural changes in the program, are now implemented;
• adjustment to the modern technology, in particular, to a new version of MS Office 2007.

We are proud of the result. All Alt-Invest consultants have already switched to a new version, which allows us not only working in a more comfortable environment, but with minimal cost offer clients a range of new services (such as operating projects prospects reassessment).

Continuing tradition

Traditional principles of our programs construction are:

• Open solutions! User can always trace the sources of each figure in the results, and those with sufficient skill can even make changes, taking into account details of the project. And the result of debates with major corporations and banks representatives on this issue is that our program solutions will continue to be open, because open algorithms make results spoofing more complex than closed systems.
• Not a calculator, but automated technique! We do not just develop a financial calculator; Alt-Invest program provides a user with unified methodological solution. This solution is being discussed by us with leading experts working in universities, banks and corporations. In 2008, our work on a unified approach to the projects evaluation was completed by the final element - Alt-Invest Project Analysis Specialist certification. AI PAS Certificate - is the guarantee that you speak the same language as investors do. And of course, all the principles of AI PAS have been implemented in Alt-Invest 6.
• We offer just what we use ourselves! All Alt-Invest consultants use Alt-Invest 6 computer program in their everyday work. Moreover, only specialists with significant experience in consulting and business practice are involved in the program development.

Major changes

Among changes, which appeared in Alt-Invest 6, we can identify some of the most significant. Indeed, changes listed below have motivated us to call the program «a new generation", it’s because of them technological and calculation structure of the program was significantly changed.

Working in MS Office 2007

Because of different data formats and interface new MS Office version has caused some difficulties working in older Alt-Invest versions. For example, the toolbar which helped to “jump” between tables and reconfigure the project disappeared. In a new version this problem was vanished. The central element of the program is the dialogue "Navigator", which can be called from any point.

Just by a single click you can move from this dialog to any table or graph, start forming a report, look at detailed description of the current table working rules (detailed references, which are installed with the system is another feature of the new version).

Also, a lot of invisible to the user details appeared in a new program, they take into account the internal technology of MS Office 2007. Now the program is equally optimized for both versions: XP/2003, and for the new 2007 version.

Project from any phase

Traditionally, Alt-Invest was designed to evaluate the project before its start. And the model of the project has always been constructed from "zero point". Some additional features were provided by Alt-Invest Summ, but its functionality in the description of the project "from the middle" was also limited. Alt-Invest 6 makes it possible to start the project description with any phase of its implementation!

Beginning of “Initial state of the project” table

In the description of the project there is a possibility to describe not only the initial balance, but also detailed information about investments, necessity in additional investments, and previously purchased assets and liabilities are analyzed as planned. Considering recent changes in the economy, the program has got the most important quality - it is convenient for regular prospects reassessment for projects that have already been started.

Any combination of projects

Alt-Invest Summ Program has always been able to combine several projects in the overall budget. But before all projects were stored in one file and had the same period of implementation. Now, we can construct, for example, the structure like this:

It means that projects can start at different time, have different duration and be placed in different files. You can group them, for example, for each company of the holding, and then gather together in a separate holding file. This makes every file smaller in volume, as well as easily changes the list of projects and moves projects from one model to another.

Construction - a lot of objects in a single project

Two years ago we created Alt-Invest Construction modification, focused on the projects in commercial, residential and industrial real estate construction. This modification was the most popular version of the program. But users were uncomfortable with fact that there was only one construction unit description in a project. And what if construction includes several flights or it’s a cottage settlement? We suggested using various workarounds before, but now there is no need for that. Alt-Invest 6 Construction allows describing any number of construction units in each project.

Now it’s much easier to analyze projects in construction. As well as for productive activities, the program provides a convenient interface for prospects reassessment of already started investment projects.

Perhaps construction is no longer the most popular area for investments, but it's still one of the most capital intensive industries, and companies who have good financial analysis tools will always have an additional competitive advantage.

Sales and production charts

There are activities where the production chart may differ significantly from the sales chart. For example, agriculture and many other seasonal types of business, aircraft building and shipbuilding, etc. To describe these activities correctly, there should be a possibility of describing purchase of materials and production separately from the sales chart. It was difficult to do in previous versions of Alt-Invest. In Alt-Invest 6 this function is completely available for any product or material. The program takes into account taxes and cash flows, calculates warehouse balances correctly and tries to protect you from errors related to the inconsistency of production and sales charts.

Nice details

All changes listed above are very important; they remove many key difficulties in financial modeling. But apart from this Alt-Invest program includes many small, not always visible improvements, each of which is the result of long discussion of users’ feedback, as well as observing specialists mastering the program at our seminars. Here are some of these innovations:

• If you switch to English, the entire program’s interface changes. This is useful when working with foreigners, as well as when using the program in countries where the Cyrillic MS Office version is missing (for example, in the Baltic countries).
• Everything is adjustable now in the sensitivity analysis: original settings, and results. Therefore, Alt-Invest 6 can do sensitivity analysis for any element of the project.
• Standard set of graphs is improved. To do so we have analyzed graphs actually used in a sample of 50 business plans.
• Dialogues that add and delete items of income / expenses are more user-friendly and understandable.
• Need for working capital section was revised. As a result, it’s easier to interpret the investment value in working capital.
• We have abandoned the concept of "zero period". The model looks more simple. It has changed many components of the initial and final tables, but switching to the new model structure takes just few minutes for most users - new formats are recognized as more understandable and simple to transfer in the text of a business plan or budget.
• There is a possibility to specify that a company uses a simplified taxation system, single agricultural tax or a tax on imputed income. All settings of tax payments can be switched to the selected system by a single parameter. The program includes standard values for Russia, but users can edit them.
• "Materials and components" and "other direct costs" concepts are separated. This helps properly reflect costs in the formation of working capital, which is very important in industrial and power energy projects.
• For construction projects involving the sale of apartments to share-holders, this income is placed in the special cell - "financing from construction co-investors", so it is separated from grants of other types, and correctly reflected in further financial analysis.
• And so on, dozens of important details...

Why do you need Alt-Invest 6 computer program? We want to point out only main arguments. During four years, which experience we’ve used in the new version development we have:

• trained more than half of all Russian banks specialists, responsible for investment projects evaluation. This allows us to assume that Alt-Invest technique has become "de facto" the standard of investment analysis for banks;
• developed the internal methodology of investment projects evaluation for Russian Railways JSC, and created special models for a number of oil companies.
• implemented Alt-Invest program in the vast majority of companies within RAO UES (United Energy System) structure.

Alt-Invest 5 users can get new version of the program with 75% discount. Transfer of data to the new version usually takes an experienced user not too much time, in addition, during the transition period both - old and new models can be used at the same time - different versions of the program can function together on the same computer.

Our licensing policy is the same as during previous 15 years - one license allows to install any number of copies within a single office.
